Medical Schools, Faces New Admission Rules.
The National Council for the Higher Education (NHCE) has changed double intake admissions in medical and health sciences programmes, saying each training institution should have only one intake a year to maximize the quality of graduates.
Some private institutions like Kampala International University (KIU) which have January, April and August intakes said will take their claim illustrating behind their three intakes in a year to the council.
Following the circular produced on 1st December, Prof. Mary Nakhanda Okwakol, the NHCE executive director said that the government is facing challenges in handling the high number of students graduating from the different institutions that offer medical and health sciences programmes.
He added further that the Ministry of Education and Sports and Ministry of Health Inter-ministrerial standing coordination committee has “categorically indicated that there are challenges encountered in students internship placements majorly attributed to two intakes a year by some institutions.”
Quoted from circular part,” The challenges include the inadequate numbers of supervising staff, the limited number of facilities with requisite equipment to support student learning and budgetary constraints, among other things.”
“Council resolved that intake or admissions of students to all medical related programmes should be only once a year,” Prof Okwakol noted during the 73rd sitting of council held on 13rd October.
Prof Okwakol emphasized in the circular that,” The purpose of this letter, therefore, is to communicate the council decision and urge all higher education institutions to implement the same for all medical and health related programmes at your institutions.”
Moreover, Prof Mouhamad Mpezamihigo, the KIU vice-chancellor, lamented about the same issues and promised to honor the council and have more liberations with NHCE on adjustments were possible to maintain intakes of their institutions.
“We received that communication. We will take it through our structures and consider comprehensively our health related programmes. We will be able to work with NHCE in case there are special requirements. I don’t think this is just cast in stone, there are realities, reasons for dual admission in Ugandan Universities especially private institutions,” he said.
