Unfavorable Scholarships Given To University Students.
Private university students in Kenya face a significant setback due to the government’s decision to bar them from accessing funds through the recently implemented university funding model. These students, hailing from diverse local and regional areas, are deeply affected by this development.
As of December 31, 2023, the Kenyan government has explicitly stated that students pursuing higher education at private universities are not eligible to apply for government scholarships. This directive, aligned with the newly established university funding model, confines government-sponsored scholarships exclusively to students enrolled in public universities.
He said the cost of living had impact negatively on parents and other sponsors, making it hard for them to continue financing the education of their children, hence the need for government support.
” We need to have a collaborative approach as it has been the case before, where our students have benefited. The country cannot afford to have a divisive approach to education in areas of funding. We need to support all universities to become sources of revenue,” said Prof Munene.
According to the new funding model, students from private universities will not be eligible for scholarships unlike those in public universities and will only get funding to a certain limit.
Moreover, the government has specified that this particular segment of university students attending private institutions will only be entitled to government funding up to a specified amount, adding an extra layer of challenge for them.
This decision comes on the heels of private universities urging the government to devise an equitable funding plan that considers the harsh economic conditions faced by parents supporting higher education across the nation.
The exclusion of private university students from government scholarships raises questions about the fairness and inclusivity of the funding model. Readers are encouraged to share their thoughts, ideas, and sentiments about the government’s position in the comments section.
