Breaking News: JSS strike confirmed Starting Monday.
Following the lastest news from trusted sources of information like The standard, Daily nation confirmed that the strike of Junior Secondary School teachers is on starting on Monday 8th January. This comes through if the Kenyan government through the Teachers Service Commission will not confirm them under Permanent and Pensionable terms.
Schools are on the brink of turmoil as contracted teachers threaten to disrupt the academic year if the Teachers Service Commission doesn’t fulfill its pledge to grant them permanent and pensionable positions. This brewing crisis follows the recent announcement by the teachers hired earlier in the year to instruct the first group of junior secondary school learners transitioning to grade 8.
According to the government speech read they want the teachers to renew the contract for another one year which is literally opposite of what is on the letter of appointment given. This as raised issues, hence affecting the learning of students for the first week of opening. Expressing their grievances to the commission, in return they receive threats which demolizes them from going back to teach without being confirmed PnP terms.
The contractual instructors, engaged under a one-year internship program, now find themselves at odds with the commission’s altered stance, seeking to extend their contract for another year instead of fulfilling the promised permanent positions. The commitment to absorb them into permanent and pensionable roles upon completing the internship was outlined in a contract signed at the beginning of the preceding year under the leadership of Dr. Nancy Macharia, the Chief Executive Officer of the Teachers Service Commission.
This sudden deviation from the agreed terms has intensified tensions, with the teachers expressing their discontent by threatening to disrupt learning activities.
The potential consequences of this dispute loom large over the resumption of the academic year, with students and parents anxiously awaiting a resolution that would ensure the smooth progress of education without any unwarranted interruptions.
