CBC Curriculum In Progress!
The CBC has implications for the training and practice of teachers, especially those who are currently studying to become teachers or are in their early years of teaching. In this article, we will explore some of the ways that the CBC will affect student-teachers in Kenya.
CBC Requires a Shift in Pedagogy
One of the major changes that the CBC brings is the shift from a teacher-centered approach to a learner-centered approach. This means that teachers have to adopt new pedagogical strategies that focus on facilitating learning, rather than delivering information. Teachers have to create learning environments that are interactive, collaborative, and engaging, where learners can explore, discover, and construct their own understanding of the subject matter.
Student-teachers have to learn and practice these new pedagogical strategies, which may be different from what they experienced as learners themselves. They have to develop skills such as questioning, scaffolding, feedback, differentiation, assessment, and integration of technology. They also have to be flexible and adaptable to the needs and interests of their learners, and be able to design and implement learning activities that are relevant, authentic, and contextualized.
CBC Requires a Change in Assessment
Another key aspect of the CBC is the change in the mode and purpose of assessment. The CBC advocates for a formative and continuous assessment, rather than a summative and terminal assessment. This means that assessment is not only done at the end of a learning cycle, but throughout the learning process, to monitor and support the progress and achievement of learners. Assessment is also not only based on written tests and exams, but on a variety of evidence, such as portfolios, projects, performances, and exhibitions.
Student-teachers have to learn and practice how to conduct formative and continuous assessment, and how to use the results to inform their teaching and learning. They have to develop skills such as designing and administering assessment tasks, collecting and analyzing evidence, providing feedback, and reporting and communicating learning outcomes. They also have to align their assessment with the learning objectives and competencies that are expected from the CBC.
CBC Requires a Broadening of Curriculum
A third aspect of the CBC is the broadening of the curriculum, both in terms of the subjects and the content. The CBC introduces new subjects, such as pre-technical and pre-career education, visual arts, performing arts, home science, and computer science, as well as optional foreign and indigenous languages. The CBC also expands the content of the existing subjects, such as science and technology, social studies, and religious education, to include pertinent and contemporary issues, such as environmental conservation, human rights, gender equality, and digital literacy.
Student-teachers have to learn and teach these new subjects and content, which may require them to acquire additional knowledge and skills, or to update their existing ones. They have to be familiar with the curriculum design and structure of the CBC, and the expected learning outcomes and competencies for each level and subject. They also have to be aware of the cross-cutting themes and issues that are integrated across the curriculum, and how to address them in their teaching and learning.
The CBC is a radical reform of the education system in Kenya, that aims to produce learners who are competent, confident, and responsible citizens. The CBC also poses significant challenges and opportunities for teachers, especially those who are currently studying to become teachers or are in their early years of teaching. Student-teachers have to adapt to the new demands and expectations of the CBC, and to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to implement it effectively. The CBC also offers student-teachers a chance to be innovative, creative, and reflective practitioners, who can contribute to the improvement of the quality of education in Kenya.
